About the Founder
Sarah Underwood is an avid nature lover, animal enthusiast, hiker, and diver. She graduated with a BB in Ecology and Environmental Science, doing undergrad research on coral reefs off the islands of Honduras. This is where she found her love of the ocean and the animals within it. Sharing the water with corals, eagle rays, barracuda, and sharks, she was able to see firsthand how amazing these creatures were and how the health of the coral reefs was in decline.
She worked in the corporate world for 7+ years but knew she was meant for more. She wanted to do something that gave back and help the underwater world she had come to love.
The idea for Staghorn jewelry was born on a beach off the Texas coast, where she discovered how she could use her skills to create something beautiful while following her passion for ocean conservation.
Staghorn Jewelry
Behind the Name
Staghorn Jewelry was named after the coral Acropora cervicornis, more commonly known as Staghorn Coral. This is one of the main reef building corals, supporting reef growth, as well as fish and other marine life habitats while offering protection from rising sea levels. The presence of these corals has declined by up to 98% since the 1980s in large part to disease, predation, coral bleaching, tropical storms, pollution, and algae overgrowth among other factors. Many restoration programs transplant Staghorn Coral fragments onto existing reefs to help restore biodiversity.
This is the pillar of what Staghorn Jewelry stands for. Sustainability and conservation are at the heart of our business model. We strive to connect people with nature and provide awareness so that together we can make a positive impact on our oceans and help restore our reefs.
We want to connect people with the beauty of the ocean and show them why it's worth saving.
All of our seashells are hand collected with care along the seashore. We value our oceans and everything it can teach us. This is why we aim to bring awareness to all of the amazing creatures within it. From the awe-inspiring manta ray to the inconspicuous lighting whelk. They each have something to teach us if we just stop a moment to listen.
