Seashells with Purpose: How We Collect and Protect Natural Resources

Seashells with Purpose: How We Collect and Protect Natural Resources

Walking along the shoreline, it’s impossible not to marvel at the delicate seashells scattered along the sand. For centuries, shells have been treasured for their beauty and even used as currency. Yet, the commercial seashell trade has put countless mollusk species and entire marine ecosystems at risk. Large-scale harvesting, destructive fishing techniques, and unethical processing threaten the very habitats these creatures call home.

At Staghorn Jewelry, we take a radically different approach. Every seashell we use is personally collected by us—by hand, on small stretches of beach, and only from shells that are already broken or naturally detached from the shore. We never disturb living mollusks or their homes. By collecting in this careful, small-scale way, we avoid harming marine life or disrupting delicate ecosystems.

This method may be modest, but it has a meaningful impact. Each shell we rescue would otherwise be lost, buried in sand or swept away, and instead, it is given new life in jewelry that honors God’s creation. Our collection process allows us to celebrate the beauty of the ocean while minimizing human impact, fostering stewardship rather than exploitation.

Beyond our designs, our mission is to raise awareness about the often-overlooked species that inhabit our oceans and the importance of protecting them. Every piece made from these carefully sourced shells carries a story—of conservation, respect, and the hope that even small actions can help safeguard the marine world for future generations
